THE CHEMISTRY QUEENS!

As of August, 2007, I have been teaching for 33 years!  I graduated in 1972 from Taylor University (Upland, Indiana) with a B.S. in Chemistry.  In 1974, I received a Masters in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Michigan.  I taught at Mercy H.S. for four years, Taylor U. for two years, Detroit Catholic Central H.S. for 15 years, and for the past twelve years I've been back at Mercy!

In January 2006 I was very humbled and honored to be recognized with the "Heart of Mercy" award.  What a blessing to work at a school like Mercy where the values of justice, human dignity, option for the poor, service, and mercy are an important part of the community.

I am single (divorced) and a few years ago purchased a new home where I live with my three cats, Callie, Mervie, and Manny (pictured below).

I am truly a "Chemistry Geek" -- I love it and I love teaching it!!

Even though I often have molecules on my mind, my interests in life are many and varied.

A few of them are listed below.

I can be reached by email at: kakitzmann@mhsmi.org

  • Trinity House Theatre:  I've been involved in this local theater group since 1993.  My roles have included actor, producer, assistant director, stage manager, set builder, sound technician, lighting technician and more!  I've been the treasurer of the board and the president and currently I'm vice-president.

  • "Chrome Folk Barbecue":  I'm currently singing and performing in a band called Chrome Folk Barbecue. The band consists of John McCoy (pictured at left, playing with me at Career Day in 2006), Paul Erlandson, Don Gulish, and myself, of course!  We play a variety of music ~ folk, "old-time" country, blues, rockabilly, and originals.  John plays guitar, bass guitar, and mandolin (among other things), Paul plays lead guitar primarily, Don plays drums, and I play guitar, banjo, and cello (and occasionally keyboard).  Our first gig was in June, 2007, and all of the songs we did that day are posted on YouTube!

  • Science Fair:  Since 1984, I've been part of the science fair scene on the local, state, and international level.  I'm currently working with the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit and the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair.

  • Trinity Church:  On Sundays I'm part of the instrumentalists for the worship team (usually playing cello).  I also sing in our church choir.

  • Michigan Science Teachers Association:  I was the "chemistry teachers' representative" on the MSTA Board for a few years.  In 2001 I was the assistant conference chairperson and in 2002 I was the Conference Chair!  I was elected to the Board as a "director-at-large" from 2002-2005.  I have been a presenter at numerous conferences locally and nationally since 1998.  This is a presentation I did for the MSTA conference in March, 2003 on "Colorful Chemistry"!

  • And a few other committees:  I'm on the local ACS (American Chemical Society) Education Committee and am the chairperson for the 2010 Advanced Chemistry High School Examination Committee.  I've also been an AP Chemistry workshop consultant and an AP Chemistry exam reader.
