Mercy High School presents Carousel, a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, set in a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th Century. The story focuses on a carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow who captivates and marries the naïve millworker Julie Jordan. After losing his job, Billy learns that Julie is going to have a baby and wants desperately to provide a decent life for his family. When Billy dies during a robbery attempt, he is allowed to return to earth to set things right with his family. Fifteen years have past on earth and Billy now encounters his teenage daughter that he never knew. She is a lonely child who has been haunted throughout her young life by her father’s reputation as a thief. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. Of all the shows that Rodgers and Hammerstein created, Carousel was their personal favorite. |
